The Pasco County School Board will hold a final public hearing on Tuesday night regarding the rezoning of school boundaries.
After a judge vetoed a plan originally approved by the board, many students have had to bounce back and forth between schools this year until a new plan is approved.
“It’s instability, it’s never knowing where they are going next. We are getting moved again and it is the exact same map that was voided by a judge,” says parent Katie Beckett.
Beckett is just one of many Pasco parents with this same concern. For nearly two years the school board has been tackling school boundaries.
“What they need to do is go back to the drawing board and start over,” says another parent, Michele McPheron.
That’s exactly what the board did after a judge vetoed the plan back in January saying it didn’t follow the law.
The board offered to let parents voice their concerns via email. Superintendent Kurt Browning tells 8 On Your Side they are taking these worries seriously.
“We’re not going to do anything we believe would adversely affect that kids,” says Superintendent Browning.
Ultimately he decided on the same plan as before with minor tweaks. It’s not enough for some parents.
“The proposed map doesn’t do anything to achieve the goal of filling schools,” says Tammy Ciske, who is another concerned parent and does not want her child to be relocated.
Another concern, is that many areas on the west side of the county, like those attending Anclote High, get to stay put and do not have to be relocated. It’s something that others find to ne unfair.
“With our kids going to school so far away, us not living in that community, our eyes and ears as parents for our children are taken away,” says McPheron.
The public hearing is at 5:00 p.m. at the school board headquarters in Land O’ Lakes located at 7227 Land O’ Lakes Blvd.
