Strep throat continues to make the rounds in several pediatrician offices throughout the Tampa Bay area, but one county is seeing quite a bit of norovirus.
Dr. Rachel Ray in Polk County says norovirus is causing kids to fall ill. It’s a nasty gastrointestinal virus that gives kids an upset stomach.
She suggests children only drink clear fluids until their stomach settles, but don’t give it to them for about an hour after they last vomited. Even then, she says treat the fluids like an IV. Let it trickle in to keep the vomiting down.
Adenovirus is also being seen in Polk and Pinellas counties. With this virus, children can have a fever for up to seven days. They usually come in with a sore throat, fever and often times pink eye. The best treatment is to let it run its course. Prescription eye drops can help with pink eye.
The flu outbreak appears to be winding down, although we know there are several superbugs lingering around. It’s something to keep an eye on as we continue to transition out of flu season.
