Tropical Storm Gaston forms in the Atlantic

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tropical Storm Gaston formed in the Atlantic Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The NHC’s 5 p.m. update said that Gaston was around 990 miles west of the Azores. The system had max sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving north at 17 mph.

“[Gaston] will slowly move north then northeast possibly affecting the Azores, but will have no impact on the United States,” meteorologist Eric Stone said.

The NHC said that Gaston could strengthen some more over the next two days, but it is not expected to become a hurricane.

The Azores could see swells by Gaston later this week, which could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
