TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center continues to issue advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone One, a system with a high chance of developing into the first named tropical storm of the season.
While heavy rain and gusty winds are ongoing in South Florida, that will not impact our area. There is a sharp cut-off of heavy rain south of the Tampa Bay area. Parts of south Florida could see rainfall totals of 6-10 inches of rain. The Tampa Bay area will see 1-3 inches total, but most of it has already fallen.
What we know
The Nature Coast – Citrus, Hernando and Pasco counties – will be mostly dry today with just a quick passing shower or two. It will be a normal summer weekend with little to no tropical impacts expected.
Pinellas, Hillsborough, Northern Polk- A few passing light showers will linger through Saturday morning. Rain chances decrease significantly after 12 p.m. although winds will stay a little breezy at times.
Sarasota, Desoto, Hardee, and Highlands- A few pockets of heavy rain are possible through 11 a.m. Saturday morning but the coverage of rain will decrease significantly after that. Winds will stay breezy through the afternoon as well.
BOTTOM LINE
Heavy rain will continue in South Florida but rain chances will decrease to just a 20% after 2 p.m. today. Winds will be breezy at times out of the northeast at 15-25 mph.
Sunday will have no impact from the tropical system as it will be well out in the Atlantic by the second half of the weekend. A few inland afternoon storms are possible.
