Run for Fun: Creating a pace strategy for a race

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — In this week’s episode of Run for Fun, we get runners mentally ready to run a race. It takes weeks and months to get physically ready for a race, but in the few days before the race, it’s time to get mentally ready.

That means it’s time to look at the forecast and make a race plan. Meteorologist Leigh Spann discusses the way she checks the weather before a race and the specifics of the forecast that will impact running the most. Coach Maria uses the weather information and course map to help determine how fast to run the race.

A runner should evaluate his or her training and take a realistic look at the shape they are in during those last few days before a race. This will also help determine the pace plan for race day.

Using the forecast, the course, and fitness level, a runner should be able to determine their plan. Runners can easily get frustrated when they make a plan not based on these aspects. Going out as fast as you can in “perfect” conditions on a non-perfect day can lead to disappointment. It may mean that the runner needs to shift expectations, and that is tough to do after spending time training.

Remember, if these race conditions are not great, there are other races. Staying consistent is more important so you’re ready for the next one.
