Activity in the tropics is heating up. Storm Team 8 is tracking three systems: Florence, Invest 92 and Potential Tropical Cyclone 8.

Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 just developed off Africa and has a well-defined area of low pressure. It is expected to become a named storm by the end of the day on Friday and would be named Helene.

Storm Team 8 is also watching Invest 92 which may also become a named system in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Florence has 65 mph winds. The latest track shows Florence possibly re-intensifying and potentially strengthening into a Category 4 heading toward the east coast.

“The official National Hurricane Center forecast calls for Florence to begin strengthening this weekend.” says Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Ed Bloodsworth. “The storm could become a major hurricane by Wednesday.”

Forecast models have Florence continuing to point toward a more westerly track long-term. Residents from the Carolina coast to New England need to keep a close eye on Florence next week.
