MIAMI (AP) – Tropical Storm Gert has officially become a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Hurricane Gert is moving toward the north, near eight miles per hour. The hurricane is expected to turn toward the northeast with an increase in speed Tuesday night.

There is no threat to the Tampa Bay area, but the Center warns swells generated by Gert will spread northward along the east coast, from North Carolina to Long Island during the next few days.

The swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.STORIES OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON-
