ATLANTA (WFLA) — A 22-year-old man is back behind bars after escaping from an Alabama jail, stealing a car, and leading police on a chase through Atlanta last week.
On Monday, the Atlanta Police Department released body camera footage showing how they found Tyree Chapman, 22, hiding out inside a recycling bin following a police chase.
According to the police department, at about 3:37 p.m. on Jan. 17, officers were dispatched after a stolen Infiniti Q50 was spotted in the area of 371 Boulevard NE. With the help of the Georgia State Patrol, the department’s aviation unit spotted the stolen vehicle in a gas station parking lot and saw Chapman get in the vehicle.
As Chapman began to drive away, responding officers tried to initiate a traffic stop; however, the 22-year-old sped off.
While leading police on a chase, APD’s chopper tracked the vehicle to a nearby convenience store, where Chapman ditched the stolen vehicle and took off on foot.
Chapman was seen running through a residential area, where he tried to hide from officers inside a recycling bin. Body camera footage shows the suspect popping out of the recycling bin as officers were approaching.
After being placed in custody, the K-9 unit and officers recovered a handgun that Chapman had tried to hide inside another recycling bin.
According to APD, Chapman later admitted to officers that he had scaped from the Bessemer City Jail in Alabama.
Chapman was charged with driving while having a suspended or revoked license, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and theft by receiving stolen property.
The 22-year-old was taken to the Fulton County Jail for processing, where he will then be extradited to Bessemer City Jail.
