TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Kansas City Chiefs reeled in another Super Bowl victory on Sunday, and while it might not be the team’s first Lombardi Trophy, the big game held a first for St. Pete native and former University of South Florida football star Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

During the Super Bowl LVIII matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, Valdes-Scantling, a wide receiver for the Chiefs, became the first USF Bull alum to score a touchdown in the Super Bowl in school history.

His 16-yard touchdown came in the third quarter of the game. It was his first career reception in the Super Bowl. Valdes-Scantling ended the Super with three receptions for 20 yards and one touchdown. The Chiefs ultimately defeated the 49ers 25-22 in an overtime thriller.

Valdes-Scantling soaked in every minute of the win, surrounded by red and yellow confetti. Following the victory, the 29-year-old receiver posted a photo of himself sitting down on the confetti-covered field on Instagram with the caption “Cashed Out.”

During his post-game interview with the NFL Network, the St. Pete native said he doesn’t know why people wouldn’t consider Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes among the greatest quarterbacks along with Tom Brady.

“We had a very special team that could battle through adversity,” he said, discussing the Chiefs’ battle to reach the Super Bowl. “Now, I’m just excited to go celebrate with the guys.”

Valdes-Scantling, originally from St. Pete, played college football at NC State and USF before being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2018. He joined the Chiefs roster in 2022 and has been a steady force for the team ever since.
