(WFLA)- As the weather gets hotter in mid-July, football fans begin to sense a taste of Fall. College football season is a month and a half away and coaches in the state of Florida are gearing up for some big decisions.
This week, the popular gatherings of college football media days begin and the SEC and ACC grab the spotlight immediately. On Tuesday, Florida head coach, Dan Mullen is scheduled to meet reporters at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala. Then on Thursday, Florida State head coach, Willie Taggart, will do the same at ACC Media Days in Charlotte, NC.
Both Mullen and Taggart enter their first preseason camps at their respective programs with a starting quarterback battle. Mullen watched quarterbacks Kyle Trask and Feleipe Franks dazzle in the Gators Orange and Blue spring game. Now the contest enters the more serious phase, deciding who will take the first snaps of 2018 on September 1st against Charleston Southern. Taggart, meanwhile, has his own predicament, albeit a nice one, having to name a starter between two (starting) quarterbacks. Last season, freshman James Blackman was thrown into duty when Deondre Francois injured in the knee in the Seminoles season opener against Alabama. The growing pains for Blackman culminated in a four touchdown pass performance in FSU’s win over Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl. The Seminoles open the season on national television, September 3rd, against Virginia Tech.
Florida State players scheduled to appear at ACC Media Days include:
RB, Cam Akers and DE, Brian Burns.
Florida players scheduled to appear at SEC Media Days include:
LB, David Reese, OL, Martez Ivey and DL, CeCe Jefferson.
