The Tampa Bay Rays have traded right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to the Boston Red Sox for left-handed pitcher Jalen Beeks.
Beeks is now on the Rays’ 40-man roster, but we are still working to learn where the Rays will use him. He made his MLB debut on June 7 when he started on the mound against the Detroit Tigers.
He had a 5-5 record and 2.89 ERA with the Triple-A team the Pawtucket Red Sox and over 16 starts. He won the title of Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2017 after he recorded an 11-8 record with a 3.29 ERA.
The Red Sox selected Beeks in the 12th round of the 2014 June draft out of the University of Arkansas. He actually spent one year as Ryne Stanek’s teammate.
Eovaldi has battled injuries over the course of his career, returning from August 2016 Tommy John surgery and March 2018 arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. He made 10 starts for the Rays this reason. He recorded a 3-4 record with a 4.26 ERA.
The Rays will put Ryne Stanek on the mound against the Yankees on Wednesday.
The non-waiver trade deadline is next Tuesday.
