ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – What professional sports team is the most underappreciated of them all? According to one big-name game show host, it’s the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays earned a shoutout from “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak Sunday afternoon.
“The most underappreciated team in pro sports? Easy. It’s @RaysBaseball. How do they keep doing it? Amazing!” Sajak tweeted.
Tampa Bay wrapped up its series with the Boston Red Sox on Sunday with a 6-1 win. The Rays won three of the four games with the World Series champions.
The Rays currently lead the AL East with a 40-24 record and are in fourth place in the MLB. Sunday’s win marked the second time in history the Rays reached 40 wins in its first 64 games.
Despite the team’s success on the diamond this season, attendance at home games is still lacking. The organization recently attempted to boost poor attendance with a $5 ticket flash sale. Even at the discount price, the team only sold out two of five games.
Still, excited Rays fans filled Pat Sajak’s mentions Sunday to thank him for recognizing their team.
“About time someone showed the Rays some love!” one Twitter user said. Another added, “They’re phenomenal, but they’re consistently ignored.”
The Rays organization also took notice and thanked Sajak for his comments with a GIF of Kevin Kiermaier putting his hand over his heart.
