(WFLA) With a sudden slew of injuries at the catcher position, the Tampa Bay Rays acquired 38-year old Erik Kratz plus cash from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for cash or a player to be named later. Kratz is expected to join the Rays in New York where they will begin another weekend series against the Yankees with first place in the AL East at stake.

Kratz has bounced around Major Leagues but landed on the Giants opening day roster this spring. He has had a difficult season batting .125 with one home run and was recently designated for assignment.

The Rays endured losing a third catcher to injury on Wednesday when Anthony Bemboom sprained his knee while stopping a pitch in the dirt. He was placed on the Injured List, joining fellow catchers Mike Zunino and Michael Perez.

The Rays had already acquired another catcher, during this spell of injuries, Travis D’Arnaud, who has played in four games with the club so far.
