Dalhausser, Lucena fall to top-seeded Brazilians in beach quarterfinals

In a matchup anticipated to come no sooner than the Gold Medal Match, Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena were bested by top-seeded Brazilians Alison and Bruno Schmidt 21-14, 12-21, 15-9.

The Brazilian men took an 8-5 lead in the first set, gaining momentum as the U.S. men trailed close behind. Alison/Bruno Schmidt took the first set 21-14.

The U.S. men rallied back in the second set, taking a five-point run in the second before Alison poked the ball across the net to put the Brazilian men on the board. The U.S. men lead 13-9 entering the first technical timeout and took the second set 21-13. The Brazilian men went on an early three-point run before Bruno Schdmidt’s serve went long, awarding the U.S. men their first point of the third set. The U.S. men could not stop the Brazilian’s momentum and Alison and Bruno Schmidt took the third set to win 21-14, 12-21, 15-9.

The Brazilian men will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Nummerdor/Varenhorst and Brouwer Meeuwsen, both of the Netherlands.
