Bucs’ Russell Gage expected to be released from hospital after scary hit against Cowboys

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With a little over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s Wild Card game against the Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Russell Gage took a scary hit and was carted off the field.

In a replay, it appeared that Gage took a shot to the side of the helmet and remained on the ground as medical personnel rushed to his side.

According to Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles, Gage was taken to a local hospital where he’ll be tested for neck injuries. Bowles added that Gage had movement in his fingers.

“They took him to the hospital. Right now, he has a concussion and they’re also testing for potential neck injuries,” Bowles said. “His fingers were moving when he was down there. I don’t know about the rest.”

On Tuesday, the Buccaneers announced Gage suffered a neck injury and remained in the hospital overnight for additional testing and observation. The team stated that he will continue to undergo additional testing.

Gage took to social media Tuesday afternoon to let fans know that he was in “great spirits.”

“I appreciate all of the texts, calls, thoughts and prayers you all had expressed towards my family and I. I just wanted to let you all know that I’m doing great and in great spirits! Thank you 🙏🏾,” the wide receiver tweeted.

Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles announced that Gage is expected to be released from the hospital this afternoon. He stated that Gage suffered a concussion from the hit, but his neck is fine.

The injury occurred just before the Bucs fell to the Cowboys 31-14 on Monday night.
