The Olympic Opening Ceremony is this upcoming Friday, so NBC Sports legend Bob Costas sat down with the most decorated athlete in Olympic history.
“So is it possible, even at the age of 31, an advanced age for a swimmer. That you can have a personal best still in you?” Costas asked Michael Phelps.
Phelps acknowledged he hasn’t swam his fastest lately.
“Yeah know I mean I haven’t done a best time since 2009. And ya know in our sport it’s like you don’t want to work for a year, two or three or four years and not get faster. I am swimming faster than I have then, and potentially it could happen. I am not gonna say no, but I would love to see a best time and I think whatever happens in Rio, I’ll be able to turn the page and know that that was the best that I can do,” he said.

The Opening Ceremony for the Rio Olympic Games can be seen August 5 on News Channel 8. News Channel 8’s Paul Ryan will be in Rio with live reports during the Olympics, which run from Aug. 5 – 21.
