WQYK radio host Dave McKay died from overdose, autopsy finds

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – WQYK radio show host Dave McKay died from an overdose of cocaine, according to an autopsy report obtained by WFLA News Channel 8.

McKay, age 55, was found dead in his St. Petersburg apartment on the morning of August 4 after he failed to show up for work at WQYK FM.

The autopsy said that McKay was alive at his home hours before his body was found. Drug paraphernalia found at the scene included a rolled up dollar bill, glass pipe, razor blade and white powder residue/lines on a ceramic plate, according to the autopsy report.

The report also said a female had left a note at McKay’s apartment saying she had left him intoxicated at about 2:15 a.m. that morning. Police do not suspect foul play, according to the report.

McKay’s real name was Steve Ehmke who hosted the Dave and Veronica Show on WQYK FM.

McKay was well-known in the Tampa Bay area. After his death, Pinellas Park city leaders announced a street will be named in his honor.
