Women may soon be required to register for the military draft.

The Senate overwhelmingly passed a $602 billion defense bill Tuesday. Included in the legislation is an amendment that would require women to register for selective service for the first time in history.

Senator Ted Cruz stood against the inclusion of the provision.

But Senator John McCain called it “simply fair” now that the Pentagon has opened all military roles to women.

The Senate’s defense bill will now be reconciled with a House version of the legislation.

The White House has threatened to veto the defense bill – but not because of the draft inclusion. Rather, the Office of Management and Budget said the bill contains “attempts to micromanage” the Department of Defense, CNN reports.
