ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A person in a wheelchair who was trying to cross a street was hit and killed by a tow truck early Monday morning in St. Pete.
The crash happened at 5:40 a.m. at 5th Ave. North and 34th Street.
According to investigators, a 2015 Ford F-450 tow truck driven by William Daniel Tabor, 35, was driving northbound on 34th Street North in the center lane. He was towing a car he had just repossessed and had stopped for the red light at 5th Avenue North.
A wheelchair-bound pedestrian was crossing 34th Street North from the eastside to the westside in the cross walk along the south side of the intersection. As the wheelchair-bound pedestrian entered the road and began crossing, the traffic light changed from red to green. Tabor began driving his tow truck northbound on 34th Street North and struck the wheelchair-bound pedestrian with the front of his truck, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department spokesperson
The wheelchair-bound pedestrian was thrown to the ground and under the tow truck. The wheelchair-bound pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:45 a.m. by the St. Petersburg Fire Department.
The name of the pedestrian has not been released.
