(WFLA) – An Ohio woman is behind bars after she allegedly left her dogs to starve in a locked cage. Authorities say one of the animals ate the other to survive, WJW reported.

Jessica J. Swinehart, 25, of Canton, was charged with two counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.

According to court records, Swinehart had locked a beagle in a cage with a German shepherd-mix and let them starve. Authorities say the German shepherd ate the beagle after it died.

Authorities arrived at Swinehart’s home to find the dog locked in the cage with the decaying beagle. The animal appeared to have lost about two-thirds of its body weight, WJW reported.

Swineheart was arrested Monday, according to the television station.
