GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFLA/WBAY) – A police K9 in Wisconsin is back at work after a stabbing nearly took his life.

Green Bay Police dog Pyro made his public debut full of energy on Monday.

He is still recovering from multiple surgeries to his neck, carotid artery, esophagus and stomach.

Police said he is going back to work on light-duty assignments, including drug-sniffing and training.

Pyro was stabbed multiple times during a weapons call earlier in April.

Police say it’s amazing he survived.

“It was a series of miracles I think, from the officer,” said Chief Andrew Smith.

“The one trauma kit we had at the time was in Scott Salzmann’s car. The fact that he knew how to use it and took quick action clearly saved Pyro’s life that day. Taking him to the right place and eventually bringing him down there was again, the right move.”

The man who stabbed Pyro has been charged in the case.

He is being held on a $10,000 cash bond and is awaiting a competency exam.
