Wednesday marks the last official day of Atlantic hurricane season, and 2016 was a busy year in the tropics.
The season brought 15 named storms and seven hurricanes, three of which were classified as major storms.
For the first time in more than a decade, a storm made landfall in Florida when Hurricane Hermine slammed into Florida’s panhandle near the town of St. Marks in September.
A month later, Hurricane Matthew took aim at Florida. Matthew came within 25 miles of Cape Canaveral and then hugged the Central Florida coastline as it moved north, leaving behind significant damage.
As Matthew approached, 2 million people were warned to flee inland. The storm left behind a path of destruction, particularly in Flagler Beach, where parts of A1A were washed away.
