TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa police on Tuesday released a dramatic video showing the interaction between motorcyclists and an SUV before one of the motorcyclists was shot on the Howard Frankland Bridge Monday night in a suspected road rage incident.
Police are asking for the public’s help finding the driver of the maroon Ford Edge SUV.
Investigators say the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. A group of motorcycle riders told police that as they crossed the Howard Frankland Bridge headed toward Tampa they were cut off in traffic by an SUV.
The motorcycles and the SUV continued on to the Tampa side of the bridge and stopped near the Kennedy Boulevard/Airport exit, where there was a physical fight between an unidentified person from the SUV and one of the motorcyclists.
“Who would not feel in danger of their life when a box of motorcycles boxed in their car and started being threatening?” said biker Joshua Laurenti. Laurenti is also a motovlogger on YouTube under the name Shadetree Surgeon.
“Absolutely it worries me because it gives motor cyclist a bad name. I absolutely worry that it’s going to continue to escalate. I’ve seen plenty of other videos where this happened, it was only a matter of time,” said Laurenti who tells News Channel 8 that some motovloggers try to capture road rage to increase their followers on YouTube.
News Channel 8 showed the video to Ron Galletti, a veteran rider and producer of the “Born to Ride” magazine and TV show.
“You can tell the driver is probably terrified. They can’t go anywhere; they fear for their lives. The bikers are probably backing up someone that they feel was disrespected, but that’s how things elevate to a place where you don’t want things to be,” Galletti said.
“The way I see it, you got a bunch of bikers riding and they have that brotherhood mentality and when somebody is disrespected, they came on like a pack of dogs. It’s not good,” he added.SUV driver returns with a gun
Police say the person from the SUV then went back to the SUV and returned with a gun and began firing, striking one of the motorcyclists in the ankle. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Andrew Norris, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“When they make a mistake around a motorcycle it’s a bit more serious than when they make a mistake around a car but a mistake is still a mistake and there’s no reason to terrify or punish somebody,” said Laurenti.
Owner of The Ride Factory in Ybor City, Brian Radatz, tells News Channel 8 “I don’t experience it that much because I don’t ride like a silly person.”
“If everybody was carrying it would probably be, everybody would be nice,” said Radatz.
Detectives say the SUV, which appears to be red or maroon Ford Edge, then left the scene heading northbound on Interstate 275. The SUV then cut over to get onto the Kennedy/Airport exit and struck another vehicle, causing little damage.
Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information that leads to the identification and arrest of the unknown suspect. Anyone with any information should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
