SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA)—At around 6:45 on Saturday evening, the light was red at the intersection of Fruitville and Lockwood Ridge Road.
But that meant nothing to this driver.
After failing to weave through two cars, the driver decided to ride the median before coming to a full, smoky stop.
The other drivers certainly had the right of way, but the video shows this speedster clearly doesn’t follow the rules.
“You know what I think? What if one of my kids was in one of those cars?” said Angi, a Sarasota parent.
There was a police officer literally sitting there the whole time! Shockingly there were no major injuries in this preventable accident.
“Had it been just a couple of seconds difference or if the cars had been just a few inches different, this could’ve had a much different outcome,” said Sarasota police spokeswoman Genevieve Judge.
Police are not releasing the identity of this driver at this time but the case is under investigation.
Red light running is a serious and dangerous offense.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says in 2017, 890 people were killed in crashes involving red light runners in the US.
That same year, these red light runners injured more than 132,000 people.
“There really is no excuse you need to stop on red every time,” said Judge.
The driver has already been given a citation, but criminal charges could be coming.
