All teachers can play an important role in a young person’s life, but great teachers have the powerful ability to impact students’ lives beyond the classroom.
When it comes to memorable teachers, Lashonda Carter of Chicago may just take the cake.
CBS Chicago reports the teacher, unable to sleep, was scrolling through Facebook at about 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning when she saw a post from Larresha Plumer, a former student who Carter taught for two years.
According to Carter, the 18-year-old had just given birth and needed help getting to a job fair.
So, the teacher dropped everything, drove Plummer to the job fair and sat in her car outside holding the baby.
“I love my students,” Carter said. “It goes outside the classroom.”
In an interview with CBS Chicago, Carter stressed the importance of nurturing students when they leave the classroom and said that being part of their lives is a lifelong commitment she happily makes.
“She’s a great person to have,” Plummer told the news station. “She’s always going to be here.”
Plummer also said she was hired for a job she applied for at the fair.
“I feel like she’s the reason it happened,” Plummer told CBS 2. “She is just a blessing.”
Carter created a GoFundMe page for Larresha and her daughter.
