AUBURNDALE, Fla. (WFLA) – Hurricane Matthew’s strong winds and heavy rains caused quite a scare in Auburndale, where the storm knocked down a tree that landed on three vehicles.

Homeowner Bernice O’Connor said she heard the wind howling around 2 a.m. and checked outside. O’Connor told News Channel 8 the wind was so bad, trees were bending. Shortly after, she heard a loud bang, went back outside her home and saw a tree had fallen.

“I heard this loud swoosh and then the bang,” O’Connor said. “I was scared and I went back in. I was afraid part would fall in the house next.”

O’Connor is thankful it did not, and that no one was hurt.

Crews with the City of Auburndale spent the day cleaning up debris and trees that had fallen. “We had a few trees down, a few palm limbs down, but really nothing too big,” Road Superintendent Caleb Gabany said. “I think we dodged a bullet.”

Emergency Operations Center Director Pete McNally reiterated that. He tells News Channel 8 the county did not have any major reports of damage. Overnight, no one called to report anything to the citizens hotline or 911.
