POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – “Porch pirates” have been targeting homes in Davenport.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said they believe the duo has been stealing packages from porches in Davenport Estates and Legacy Park subdivisions. All of the boxes were from Amazon and were found opened and empty a mile from each crime scene, deputies said.
A female was caught on camera grabbing a package from a front porch and running off.
Deputies believe the suspect(s) were driving 2012 model black Chevy Camaro, potentially with a female and male inside.
“My dad was home, my two teenage sons were home. There was a car in the driveway at the stated delivery time. They must be very quick, straight to the porch, grab it and run,” Emma Shepherd told News Channel 8.
The thieves took Christmas presents from Sheperd’s front porch. She is thankful Walmart has offered to replace everything, but knows others aren’t as fortunate.
“I just hope they realize what they’re doing to local people that are working hard. I mean, I work hard to provide for three kids at Christmas. I’m a single mom. What they’re doing is devastating not just for the people that are buying the presents, for the kids that don’t get to open them at Christmas,” Shepherd said.Tips
“First and foremost – don’t let Amazon deliver to your home when you’re not there – have your packages sent to work (if possible) or somewhere where there is a person there to receive it. Secondly – if you see something, say something!” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
Experts also recommend if you are home, put a note on your door and ask the delivery person to knock.
You can also have your items shipped directly to the store, post office, or delivery store.
