ROBY MILL, Wigan, England (NBC News) — It may be serious science–or just a clever British publicity stunt.
A team of space enthusiasts from Sheffield, England launched a meat and potato pie into space Friday, attached to a weather balloon.
The pioneering delicacy was launched a few days before the world pie-eating championship next week at a place called Harry’s Bar.
The stated aim of the launch was to see if the pie’s quick trip to 100,000 feet would change the molecular structure of the pie–making it quicker to eat.
The group attached tracking equipment to the weather balloon and planned to analyze the data.
A spokesman for the company that made the pie says he expected the pie would freeze on the way up, and would get cooked as it sped up on re-entry.
Presumably, the data will show if, in fact, “the pie’s the limit.”
