HOLLYWOOD, CA (CNN) – It was billed as the battle of the century but Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman emerged victorious at the weekend box office.
As expected, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice easily won the weekend. Despite large numbers of negative review, the big budget brawl brought in $170.1 million, breaking records along the way. Batman v Superman now boasts the biggest weekend opening of this year, the biggest ever opening for a DC Comics movie, and the biggest pre-Summer opening weekend.
Zootopia slipped to second place with $23.1 million, which brings its four-week estimated total to over $240 million.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 nearly doubled experts’ predictions with an $18.1 million opening, good enough for third place.
Both Miracles From Heaven and The Divergent Series: Allegiant lost traction in their second weekend in theaters. Weekend box office estimates have both movies in a virtual tie with $9.5 million.
