LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office identified the two Lakeland residents who were killed in a mobile home fire early Wednesday morning.

Denny Shane Bassford, 46, and Susan Denese Hall, 41, died in the blaze at 4343 Old Polk City Road. The sheriff’s office said the cause and manner of their deaths will be determined through toxicology tests. Foul play is not suspected.

The PCSO Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call shortly after 1 a.m. about a mobile home that was on fire. When deputies arrived the home was fully engulfed in flames.

Lisa Turner, Susan Hall’s aunt, rushed to the mobile home after receiving a frantic phone call.

“They called and said there was a fire and they were both in here dead,” she said. “I guess they were sleeping last night when the fire started and they just didn’t wake up. Her, Shane and the dog were in there, they said.”

Flames erupted just after 1 a.m. Family have only heard the cause might be electrical.

“If they were sleeping and you know maybe from the smoke got to them before and you know they didn’t just wake up. I don’t know,” Turner said.

Elton Robinson, Bassford’s grandfather, lives behind the couple. He woke up to people screaming at his door.

“There was one fellow who said he was trying to get everybody out of it and it wasn’t but two people in there. And that was my grandson and his girlfriend,” Robinson said.

“That grandson of mine was a smart boy in a lot of ways. He could put things together. I can’t figure out why he couldn’t come out that trailer,” he added. “It’s going to be hard.”

It’s a reality neither family can come to grips with.

“They were good people and I can’t believe they’re dead,” Turner said.

Another dog was found uninjured outside the home.
