Like medical doctors, veterinarians make mistakes, too, but one doozy of a blunder has the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board taking action.
Dr. Laura Hurt is accused of performing elective surgery on a dog without the owners’ consent. According to records filed with the licensing board, the family brought their dog, Bourbon, in to have two teeth pulled, but instead, Dr. Hirt castrated the purebred redbone coonhound the family was planning on breeding.
The board concluded the Sandusky County veterinarian did not have permission to neuter Bourbon. In addition, the Board found “there was no documentation” of the surgery.
The board fined Dr. Hurt $1,000. She must also complete a course on medical records, plus submit ten patient medical records to the Board – each quarter – for one year.
It’s not the first time the board has disciplined Dr. Hirt. In 2017, the board said that care for another dog “fell below the standards of veterinary medicine.”
The board discovered that “no diagnostics were performed to justify the surgery.” The board fined Dr. Hirt $500 and ordered her to take courses on diagnosing diabetes and recordkeeping.
