TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Tampa police have arrested University of South Florida defensive back Hassan Childs after an off-campus road rage shooting that happened over the weekend.
Childs is facing aggravated assault charges and a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. He was taken into custody at a local hospital, where he is still in stable condition after police say he was shot three times.
The incident happened at the Eagle Point Apartments on 14551 N 46th St. in Tampa around 11 p.m. Saturday.
Police say the dispute was between Childs and a man identified as Jovanni Jimenez. New details about the incident were released on Monday.
According to police, Jimenez was driving home on Skipper Road with his wife and 3-year-old son when another car, driven by Childs, started tailgating him and attempting to pass him. When Jimenez pulled over into the apartment complex to let the car pass, investigators say Childs pulled up to the car.
Jimenez’s wife says that’s when she saw Childs point a silver firearm towards their car. She told Jimenez about the weapon as he continued to drive toward his apartment. Police say Jimenez has a valid concealed weapons permit, and removed his gun from his waistband to put it on the seat next to his leg.
Jimenez pulled over again and stopped his car when Childs continued to tailgate him. Police say Childs then pulled up again and pointed a silver handgun towards Jimenez.
Jimenez told police he was in fear of his life and his family’s life, and fired three rounds at Childs, who was hit once in the torso and twice in the arm. Jimenez then drove home and immediately called 911.
Detectives told News Channel 8 that since Jimenez did not start the altercation, he will not be charged in the case.
Childs has an active concealed weapons permit. Police say they found a loaded firearm and less than 20 grams of cannabis in his car.
As of late Monday night, Tampa General Hospital did not give out any information on the football player’s current medical status.
At last check on Monday morning, the athlete was in stable condition. However, according to jail records, Childs has posted bail.
When we inquired with the Tampa Police Department on whether or not a bail bondsman facilitated this process inside Childs’ hospital room, we were told that they did not know the answer.
The University of South Florida says it is aware of the arrest, and tells News Channel 8 that Childs is being withheld from football-related activities for an indefinite period of time.
USF head football coach Charlie Strong released a statement on Sunday in response to the incident:
“We are deeply concerned that an incident occurred overnight in which one of our players, Hassan Childs, was injured in a shooting. Thankfully, Hassan is in stable condition and being well cared for, and no one else was injured. There is an ongoing investigation of the incident and we are in the process of gathering further information. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, we cannot comment further at this time.”
Strong is scheduled to address reporters after football practice on Tuesday around 11:30 a.m.
