Sleeping driver hits pickup on I-4 in Lakeland; 1 dead: FHP

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Highway Patrol said one person died in a crash on Interstate 4 in Polk County Tuesday morning.

The Highway Patrol said a Lexus driver was heading east in the outside lane of the interstate when he fell asleep and lost control of the car near County Line Road.

The vehicle went into the center lane of the roadway, where it collided with a Dodge pickup truck, then it started spinning off the road and into a concrete embankment.

One person inside the Lexus died. Their age was not disclosed. The driver, a 41-year-old Orlando man, an 18-year-old passenger and a 23-year-old passenger all suffered minor injuries. A 17-year-old boy in the vehicle and the pickup driver, a 48-year-old man from Ruskin, were not hurt.
