TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Interstate 75 reopened Tuesday morning after crews finished cleaning up the wreckage from multiple crashes along the roadway.
The Florida Highway Patrol said two CMVs jackknifed, and one spilled diesel fuel on the roadway.
The first crash occurred at about 11:30 p.m. near mile marker 226. The Highway Patrol said a driver was traveling in wet conditions and lost control of their Jeep Wrangler, went off the road and hit a concrete barrier. The Jeep came into a rest in the roadway.
A semi-truck with double trailers did not stop in time, hit the Jeep and jackknifed, blocking both lanes of the exit ramp to CR-579.
Another semi-truck behind it slammed on the brakes to avoid a crash, and also started to jackknife. Then it ran off the road and hit a guardrail. The landing gear of the trailer punctured the right side of the fuel tank, causing it to spill about a half a tank of diesel, the Highway Patrol said.
At least one person was injured, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.
