HALLANDALE BEACH, FL (WCMH) – Thousands of the “velella” jellyfish were found washed ashore on Florida’s Hallandale Beach.

The city of Hallandale Beach posted the pictures to its Facebook page last Thursday, WCMH reported.

The “vellella” jellyfish are a bluish-purple color and nicknamed “blue sailors”.

While they aren’t known to sting, they often travel with the Portugese man-of-war jellyfish.

The jellyfish have bodies that allow them to sail away from shore, but sometimes strong winds can carry them onto beaches.
