SPRING HILL, FL (WFLA) – Recently, as members of the Spring Hill YMCA worked to stay healthy, thieves broke into cars in the parking lot. The thieves smashed windows to steal driver’s licenses and other IDs and checkbooks.
These alleged thieves then took extreme measures to fool bank tellers so they could cash the checks.
“Whether it’s shaving, of whether it’s makeup, or whether it’s wigs, a lot of times they’ll try to do that to make themselves look like the person in that picture as much as possible,” Det. William Cooper with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
Bank cameras caught one woman in the act. Police say she used a stolen ID and checks to get away with cash. “In this case, that could be the key that leads us to more people,” Det. Cooper said.
Police say these thieves have also hit Hernando County, Tampa, Clearwater and Safety Harbor.
“Unfortunately, this is one of the largest ones I’ve had recently. The victim that came through, she’s out over $8,000,” Cooper said.
Take Mike Diaz’s advice to keep yourself safe. “Don’t leave anything visible. I really don’t keep anything in the car that somebody can have,” Diaz said.
