SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA) — Three Highlands County teachers are in hot water. All of them are accused of sending or receiving naked photos with students.
“I’m extremely disappointed,” Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton said.
Detectives say Sebring High School teacher Amanda Roser-Cannady sent nude photos of herself to two 18-year-old students. She has since resigned.
Since the two students are 18, Benton says it’s unclear at this time if Roser-Cannady will face criminal charges.
Deputies just launched an investigation into Bridget Silva, a teacher at Avon Park High School. Officials say she had nude photos of a 16-year-old student on her phone.
Silva is now on administrative leave.
And Hill-Gustat Middle School teacher Stacy Hooks was charged with nine counts of child porn. She is already in jail on charges of having sex with a 14-year-old student.
“It’s unfortunate that people are making such poor choices when you think about it, it’s all self-serving, and they’re not thinking of another human being but themselves when they do things like this,” Sheriff Benton said.
“They have violated the dignity of these kids, but more important I don’t think they have any clue of how they have damaged the trust of their students, their parents, the community, in general,” she said.
Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rodney Hollinger told News Channel 8 the district is cooperating with authorities and meetings are being held with staff members. He added that parents should not be afraid to send their kids to school.
“We’re not going to overlook anything … We’ll investigate fully. If parents are concerned, they need to talk to administrators. They are very competent and well-trained,” Hollinger said.
As the sheriff’s office continues to investigate these cases, the school district is doing investigations of its own. The sheriff will be meeting with the school board next Tuesday to talk about child abuse reporting laws.
