Tampa police have arrested a man who is accused of exploding a pipe bomb in his backyard on Wednesday afternoon.
Joseph David Caltagirone, 60 of 1019 E 17th Ave. was charged with Making, Possessing, Throwing, Placing, Projecting or Discharging a Destructive Device, which is a felony.
A second man who was questioned Wednesday has not been charged.
Detectives say the explosion happened at 4:24 p.m. on Wednesday. No one was hurt and there was no property damage.
Police closed a 4-block stretch of Columbus Drive during the busy afternoon commute.
Police searched the neighborhood and discovered the remnants of a PVC pipe bomb in the backyard of Caltagirone’s home. The explosion left a hole in the ground.
The Tampa Police Department bomb squad and agents from the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) and FBI searched the house while the two men were questioned.
No other details have been released.
