Tampa Bay group raises money to install “Unity” Flag across from large Confederate Flag

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – The Confederate Battle Flag is a symbol that ignites emotion on all levels. Across from the largest confederate flag in the Tampa Bay area, there is a proposal to erect an even larger unity flag. A local group called Unity Flag of Tampa Bay has started this Kickstarter campaign to raise money for it.

Aaron McCrae is leading the effort. He said they want the Unity Flag because “that flag (confederate) just doesn’t represent the bay area in the right light.” The group needs to raise $65,000 to have that flag put up, so far they’ve only raised $3500. They only have 16 days to do it.

Marion Lambert, of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, who  maintains Confederate Memorial Park where the Confederate Flag is located, said he doesn’t think it will happen. “It’s a pipe dream. They haven’t foreseen the difficulties they’re going to incur,” he said. McCrae however is confident it will. “I don’t see why we can’t raise that money. I think it’s a lot of people that feel the same way that Unity Flag for Tampa Bay stands for,” he said.
