TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A centerpiece of Tampa history is re-opening amid fanfare and celebration.
The Bryan Glazer Jewish Community Center, named for the co-chairman of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was dedicated Thursday morning with dignitaries, community leaders and citizens.
“The fact we’ve had the privilege of renovating this landmark property is a major opportunity,” said center executive director Jack Ross.
On December 8, 1938, the Fort Homer W. Hostelry Armory opened. It was the day after the Pearl Harbor Attack—75 years ago.
Fast forward decades.

It includes 100,000 square feet of community space with amenities like a basketball court, meeting space and food bank.
“We’re just thrilled that we’re not only able to restore history in Tampa but also to be the catalyst moving forward with its renaissance,” Ross said.
The building once housed the Florida Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve.
It hosted Elvis Presley and President John F. Kennedy.
State and local funds, plus private dollars, helped pay for the $30 million project, center leaders said.
