TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Tampa Police officials released the names of the suspects who died following a shooting in Tampa Saturday night when a TPD officer was also wounded.

The shooting happened near the Hyatt Place on N. 30th Street between 4 and 5 p.m. Officers responded to the report of the cars driving erratically. They found two suspects at the hotel parking lot, the gunfire was exchanged.RELATED: Tampa police officer wounded; suspect dead after shooting

According to TPD, one of the suspects, Edward Leroy King, 51, had already been shot when the officers arrived at the parking lot. The second man, Patrick Matthew McManamon, 46, opened fire and shot Officer Jose Rodriguez. Rodriguez and another officer returned fire, wounding McManamon.

Officer Rodriguez was hit once. According to TPD, he was wearing his protective gear. He is still at the hospital. Rodriguez has been with TPD for 13 years. He is 53.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn visited Rodriguez at the hospital. In his statement the mayor said:

“We are thankful today that Officer Rodriguez is alive and able to spend Easter  with his family. It is a constant reminder that on any given traffic stop or any seemingly routine call, our officers can find themselves in life threatening situations. We are lucky that Tampa Police officers are willing to risk their lives to protect ours”

Both suspects had prior arrest records in Hillsborough County. King was arrested in 2015 for driving with the license suspended, canceled or revoked and possession of heroin with the intent to sell. McManamon was arrested in 2015 on the charges of battery/domestic violence, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also has the state criminal record with charges of attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and other violent crimes.
