UPDATE: The deceased man has been identified as 31-year-old Rodrick Childs, of Gainesville. Deputies said the stolen vehicle Childs was driving was taken from Gainesville.
PREVIOUS STORY: POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – A man fleeing police after a routine traffic stop has died after crashing into another car in Polk County on Sunday evening, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 6:34 p.m., a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to perform a routine traffic stop in the area of Kathleen Road and Duff Road, and believed the car to be stolen. When additional units arrived, the male suspect fled, leading deputies on a chase.
PCSO pursued the suspect for eight minutes to Duff Road when he lost control of his vehicle, crashed into an oncoming car, and rolled into a yard where the vehicle come to a stop against a house located at 2433 Duff Road.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was ejected, and later died, the Sheriff’s Office reports.
The people in the oncoming car were not seriously injured. No one was at home at the residence where the vehicle came to a rest. The house did not sustain significant damage.
The name of the suspect has not been released at this time.
