GREEN BAY-APPLETON, Wis. (WFLA/WBAY) – A Wisconsin motorist got the shock of a lifetime when the SUV he was driving broke down north of Milwaukee.

When he looked under the hood… he saw something unusual among the coils of pipes and belts.

The 4-foot ball python seemed to be okay, but he went on quite the ride.

“Last night they received a call from a disabled motorist. That motorist relayed the information to dispatch, when he popped the hood after his car quit running, that he realized there was a snake underneath his hood,” said Omro Police Chief Joe Schuster.

Officers found the snake first sitting on top of the battery before it was scared deeper into the engine.

“I give credit to the officers. I, I wouldn’t have been there, but they were, they were up to their elbows in the engine compartment trying to get ahold of this snake,” said Chief Schuster.

Officers had to call for help in the form of Steve Keller, known as “The Snake Man.”

He rescues and adopts snakes from all across the state.

He admitted the rescue was something he’d never done before.

“It took us about an hour and a half to get the snake out from under the car. We had to bring in a tow truck, lift the car so we could get under the wheels. It was very challenging,” said Keller.

But it was a success and the ball python appeared to be unscathed.

Omro police say animals like the snake aren’t allowed in the city, so they ticketed a resident who claimed ownership of the snake.

But, they said they’d rip up the ticket if he’d pay to repair the damage the serpent caused.
