Sarasota police need your help to solve a strange mystery.
Two men dropped off a man at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and he quickly died.
Now officers are looking for those men to find answers.
At 3:30 am Sunday morning, a dark dodge minivan pulled up to Sarasota Memorial Hospital carrying 28-year-old Derek Dewey.
Then the two men took him out and left him there.
They briefly spoke with the Valet attendant then drove off.
Dewey died soon after, and right now only these two men may know why.
Judge said, “Did they cause something that led to his death? Do they know why he died? These are all questions that we want to have answered.”
A toxicology report will reveal whether this was drug related, but the test will take weeks.
PJ brooks with the drug recovery program ‘First Step’, says these sorts of mysterious hospital drop-offs happen often.
Brooks said, “I would rather have that circumstance than finding out someone that I cared about overdosed and someone knew and didn’t do anything about it.”
Lately he’s seen a local spike in drug overdoses- mostly linked to heroin.
Brooks said, “With the crackdown on the prescription drug epidemic what we’ve seen is kind of a pushup of the heroin use.”
He says abusers are combining heroin with potent pain killers like fentanyl for an added high. Sometimes it can have deadly results. Just like what happened a few weeks ago with two students at New College of Florida.
Brooks said, “Until we get a real handle on how we handle treatment, you’re going to see this kind of phenomenon happening all the time, it’s like Whac-a-mole”
But this new case is a complete mystery, and police need these two men to help solve it.
The men are not considered suspects, but police still want to talk to them.
News Channel 8 found a friend of Dewey. He didn’t want to speak on camera, but he and other friends on social media are all eager to find answers.
So if you have any information on this case, call Sarasota Police.
