VIDEO: Deputies nab motorcyclist accused of driving recklessly every morning

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Sarasota County deputies say they arrested a 20-year-old man after learning he drives recklessly every morning. On Thursday deputies stopped Sergey Baygulov after he fled from them, traveling more than 100 miles per hour, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

In March commuters on River Road in south Sarasota County contacted the sheriff’s office to say Baygulov, of North Port, was illegally passing and weaving in and out of traffic every morning at deadly speeds, deputies said. River is a two-lane road.

Early Thursday deputies used surveillance to follow Baygulov from River Road to I-75 and Fruitville Road in Sarasota. Video from the sheriff’s office helicopter shows a driver speeding past other vehicles and weaving in and out of traffic.

Around 6:34 a.m. Thursday a deputy reported seeing Baygulov on his red and white sport motorcycle as he made a right turn on River Road from US 41. Shortly after that, radar measured his speed as 92 mph – in a 45 mph zone, deputies said.

A deputy attempted to stop Baygulov, but the motorcyclist continued traveling at a high rate of speed, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy stuck with Baygulov for about 1.2 miles but stopped because of dangerous conditions. Thits is when the helicopter caught footage of the suspect.

“The motorcycle passed several vehicles in the southbound lanes while going northbound on River Road,” deputies said.

Deputies then waited for Baygulov to arrive at his place of employment. They arrested him and charged him with fleeing to elude with disregard to safety of persons and/or property. In addition, deputies discovered the motorcycle was unregistered and had an unassigned Florida license plate, according to the sheriff’s office. Baygulov is also charged with failing to register a motor vehicle and attaching an unassigned tag.

The suspect admitted to “his driving behaviors,” deputies said.

News Channel 8 went to Baygulov’s home Thursday night. No one came to the door.

Commuters ask fellow drivers to slow down

Drivers in Sarasota County told News Channel 8 they see speeding motorcyclists all the time. The commuters told us they just shake their heads in disbelief.

“Yeah, of course, slow down and think before they do stuff like that,” Alex Durshpek, of Northport, said. “A lot of people have kids, you know? They gotta watch it because they’re going to kill somebody.”

Jack Wilbur, also of Northport, echoed that same sentiment. “The thing is they don’t care if they put other peoples’ lives at risk,” Wilbur said.

“I think they should take their license away,” he added.

It’s not only in Sarasota. Law enforcement authorities say they’re cracking down on aggressive driving along a stretch of Interstate 4 where three people recently died in crashes.

The Florida Highway Patrol and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office announced the crackdown on aggressive drivers began Friday. Over the first three days, deputies and troopers wrote 417 citations. They also made eight arrests and gave out 164 warnings.

Highway patrol spokeswoman Kim Montes says one of the I-4 crashes was caused by speed, the other by reckless driving.

The Orlando Sentinel reports the number of people injured in crashes on I-4 in Seminole County during March was up 56 percent over last March. The number of killed climbed from two to six over that same period.

The effort also includes other local police agencies.
