BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WFLA) – The Baltimore County Police Department in Maryland has released more information regarding the shooting of Officer T. Hayes, the daughter of Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino.
Officer Hayes is a 13 1/2 year veteran of the force. She was involved in a prior police-involved shooting in 2008.
Police said she remains in stable condition at a hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body.
The deceased suspect in the shooting was identified as Robert Johnson, 76.
Police said Johnson himself called 911 saying there was someone inside his home waving a gun at him.
Body-worn camera footage and additional evidence show that when officers arrived, there was no one else in the home and Johnson picked up a gun and pointed it at officers, causing them to open fire.
Homicide Unit detectives determined Johnson’s gun wasn’t loaded. They also discovered he left his will and last requests for burial out for officers to find.
Police said Officer Hayes and three other officers fired their service weapons at Johnson. The officers are on routine administrative leave.
