Stranded raccoon rescued from channel marker in Sarasota

Authorities were called Wednesday to rescue a furry friend that got lost and stranded in the middle of the water in Sarasota.

Mote Marine Laboratory officials were out near Sarasota around noon responding to an injured turtle when they spotted a raccoon stranded on a channel marker.

Mote Marine contacted Sarasota police, who then called Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials and Longboat Key police to help.

Video posted by Sarasota police shows the agencies working together to safely remove the raccoon from the marker using a large net. The little guy seemed a little nervous and actually ended up going overboard when officers tried to get him into the boat.

After swimming around for a few moments, the raccoon moved back toward the boat and climbed onto the side. The rescuers were then able to grab him and get him safely inside.

The raccoon was later released back on dry land.
