SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man is dead after a shootout on Fruitville Road in Sarasota County Saturday night, deputies said.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said at 8:08 p.m., deputies found the body of a man in a pickup truck on Fruitville Road just west of I-75.
Deputies said they found two people, a female driver and her male passenger, in a sedan nearby.
According to the sheriff’s office, the passenger said the deceased man was the driver of the pickup.
The passenger said the pickup driver had gotten into an argument with them, which escalated when the pickup driver fired his gun at the two occupants.
Deputies said the passenger told them that he exited the sedan and fired back at the pickup truck, fatally shooting the driver. According to the sheriff’s office, the passenger had a valid carry concealed weapon license at the time.
The eastbound lanes of Fruitville Road were closed from Paramount Drive to I-75. By Sunday morning, the roadway was clear.
The sheriff’s office said the two people in the sedan were released while the investigation continued.
The dead driver was taken to the medical examiner’s office. Detectives were still canvassing the area as of Sunday morning.
