SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — It’s an exciting day for the labor and delivery teams at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System at their Sarasota and Venice campuses.

Several moms gave birth to babies that will get to forever celebrate a unique birthday. The chances of a child being born on a Leap Day are 1 in 1,461.

On Thursday, the hospital said seven new “leaplings” were born. “Leaplings” refer to people born on Feb. 29.

As of 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 29, eight moms are currently in labor on the Sarasota campus.

The Venice campus even celebrated their first ever “leapling” baby since the location opened in 2021.

In past years, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System delivered seven babies on Leap Day in 2016, and eight in 2020.
