SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) – The Sarasota Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting Saturday night.

According to police, the officer involved in the shooting in uninjured.

Police say around 6:30 p.m., a patrol officer responded to a call for service in the 2400 block of Bay Street. The officer responded after witnesses called 911 to reports a woman screaming and shots fired in the area.

When the officer arrived, police say they saw an adult male, armed with a gun.

Sarasota Police Chief Jim Rieser said the man shot and killed an adult woman in front of the responding officer.

Police say the officer fired his gun. The man died, however, it is unknown if he was killed by the officer or by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to SPD.

Per the police department’s policy, the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
